The University of Michigan Began in Detroit in 1817

Michigan’s history began before Michigan became a state, and its move to Ann Arbor helped shape the university and campus recognized today.

The institution was established in Detroit in 1817. In 1837, as Michigan became a state, the university moved to Ann Arbor and began developing its permanent campus there.

An Early Territorial Institution
